SEAGATE
Seagate Technology was founded in 1978 by Alan Shugart and Finis Conner under the name ‘Shugart Technology’. In 1979 they changed their name to Seagate Technology. The company is headquartered in Cupertino, California. Seagate launched the first 5.25-inch hard disc drive, the ST-506, laying the foundations for the hard disc drives commonly used in personal computers.
Seagate specialises in data storage solutions such as hard disk drives (HDD) and solid state drives (SSD). Since the 1980s, it has played a pioneering role in HDD and SSD technologies by making many innovations in the industry. In 1983, it was IBM's largest supplier, holding 45 per cent of the market. In 1991, it launched the first Barracuda HDD at 7200 RPM and in 1996 the first Cheetah HDD at 10,000 RPM.
In the 2000s, Seagate became the world's largest independent HDD manufacturer, acquiring major competitors such as Maxtor and Conner Peripherals. Over time, the company expanded its product portfolio and developed various storage solutions such as NAS, video analytics discs, cloud solutions and high-capacity drives for data centres.
In addition to being a major player in data storage technologies, Seagate also invests heavily in research and development. It maintains its leadership in the industry by working on next-generation data storage technologies and innovative products. The company's famous products include the Exos, Nytro and IronWolf series.
One of the key factors in Seagate's success is its ability to manufacture its own components. In this way, they have gained a competitive advantage by reducing costs. At the same time, they continue to offer fast and reliable data storage solutions by taking important steps in SSD technology.
